Project Outline
Growing up with family in the architectural industry established my interest in the design of the urban world. For this project I decided to investigate this and combine graphic art with another interest in my life - sporting stadiums and arenas.
I began by researching some of my favourite architecturally designed stadiums from around the world and analysing their aesthetics. There shapes, materials, size, textures, and colours are all features I used to respond to the architecture graphically in the form of a set of posters.
Project Inspiration
In my 3rd year of study at Liverpool John Moores University, an outcome from a short length project, Document Your Culture, sparked some ideas of developing the themes to wider lengths. The briefing was to produce an outcome based off a culture that’s personal to you. In my case this was my design roots within my family , specifically architecture. The outcome for the project was a zine based around the 2018/19 Champions League. It consisted of line drawn stadiums alongside scores and teams that’s made the tournament one of the most rememberable for football fans - visually communicated through typography and colour.
SAN SIRO
One of the more historic stadiums I chose to visualise was The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, commonly known as the San Siro. The spiral stairways and curved stands give the stadium rounded design appearance. This iconic look is what I based my graphic poster off.
BORISOV ARENA
This 13,000-seater football stadium was completed in 2012 and has a strong fluid-like dome appearance. the design of the stadium and its aluminium shine alongside holes makes the structure feel alive and living. These aesthetic features are imitated in my design.
BIRDS NEST
The £300m National Stadium was built for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and is a unique landmark. The design of the stadium is said to be based off Chinese cracked poetry but has adopted the name ‘Bird’s Nest’. the features that I translate into my design is the web of twisting steel sections that form the roof and give a stunning appearance.
MANÉ GARRINCHA
The Mané Garrincha Stadium replaced as the new national stadium of Brazil in 2013. Its design was inspired by some of the country’s historic landmarks. features on the Christ the Redeemer statue resemble the tall 228 structural pillars surrounding the stadium. This design feature was used in the as inspiration for the outcome.
PGE NARODOWY
Warsaw’s National Stadium, also known as Stadion Narodowy in Polish, won World Stadium Award 2012. It’s oval shaped and patterned exterior resembles a wicker basket. This feature is what I used as inspiration to combine my design style with the stadium identity.
THE CALABASH
The First National Bank Stadium or simply FNB Stadium, also known as The Calabash, was built to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The design is based off a calabash, a percussive instrument used in African music. the rounded shape and patterned appearance are features that both the architecture and I have used in the designing process.
